Crash Diagnosis

Blue Screen of Death

“Blue Screen of Death (also known as a blue screen or BSoD) is an error screen displayed on a Windows computer system after a fatal system error, also known as a system crash: when the operating system reaches a condition where it can no longer operate safely.” – see Wikipedia article. You can recognize if you get one, because it will be white characters on a blue screen and the computer has stopped responding.

One thing you can do to help a professional solve the problem is to snap a picture of the screen with your smart phone camera, and save it for later. (Click image to right to see large size.)

Possible BSoD Causes

Historically, these Blue Screens would be caused by error conditions in the kernel or a device driver. Nowadays, if you get one, the chances are 99 out of 100 that a virus/malware is the culprit. You can run your anti-virus software. Be sure it is updated to the latest anti-virus definitions. If your anti-malware doesn’t find and/or fix¬†the problem, we might be able to help. If there is no sign that malware is behind it, it is *possible* that it really is a driver problem. We know how to diagnose and remedy that, so please contact us for help.
